ALGIERS (AFP) – Four armed Islamists have been killed by Algerian security forces during firefights in Tizi Ouzou and Boumerdes, east of the capital Algiers, local news media reported Friday.

Three members of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb were killed by government troops on Thursday at Maatkas, near Tizi-Ouzou in the Kabylia region, the Internet site of the El Watan newspaper said.

Two soldiers died as well, and three assault rifles were seized by the military, it said. There was no official confirmation of the report.

In a second incident, also on Thursday, an Islamist was killed as security forces mounted a joint operation on an armed group at Kharrouba, near Boumerdes, 50 kilometres (30 miles) from Algiers, the APS news agency said.

Another assault rifle as well as munitions were recovered, it added, citing a security source.
